Clark
County wanted to create a service-oriented government center that clearly
expressed the natural geography of Nevada rather than the nearby "Las
Vegas Strip". The firm won first place in a national design competition
for their creative and sensitive approach to the county's goals. Ten years
after its completion, the government center is recognized by critics around
the world to embody and define civic architecture. This circular
form establishes a sense of place by using one of the oldest forms of
community geometry: the circle. A feeling of accessibility is symbolized
through the open, outstretched arms of the building's semicircular design,
which also functions as a way-finding device. |
