Blending
Sasaki's Modernism with Klauder's revivalist, rural Italian Tuscan style
was an architectural challenge. The value of university icons also had
to be considered. Native sandstone exteriors and clay tile roofs are used
in conjunction with precast concrete to suggest this new Postmodern ideal.
An 80-foot campanile and low-running loggias were planned, and direct
physical connection was made to the campus network of open greens, quadrangles
and strong axial pathways. Programmed
elements include the library, located below grade, and new offices and
a faculty commons room above grade. These components are connected to
a 400-seat auditorium and the four-story campanile. |
